History of the Christmas party

Short Christmas history along with the Christmas traditions and songs of many nations. The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. The early Mesopotamians celebrated many of our Christmas traditions.
The Persians and the Babylonians celebrated a similar festival. When the Winter Solstice approached, with its long cold nights and short days, people feared the sun would not return. Special rituals and celebrations were held to welcome back the sun.

LA Limos for all your Christmas party requirementsThe festival called Saturnalia, was celebrated  by the Romans to their god Saturn it began in the middle of December and ended on January 1st. The celebration would include masquerades in the streets, big festive meals, visiting friends, and the exchange of good-luck gifts a  forerunner to the Christmas party. The Romans also decked their halls with garlands of laurel and green trees lit with candles.

Christians were alarmed by the continuing celebration of pagan customs such as Saturnalia among their converts. Some claim that the Christian Christmas celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also to Persians, whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianity's main rivals at that time.

The Church took the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturnalia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas, helping us to celebrate the modern Christmas party..

The exact day of the Christ child's birth has never been proved. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In 137 AD the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of the Christ Child to be celebrated as a solemn feast. In 350 AD another Bishop of Rome, Julius I, chose December 25th as the observance of Christmas.

Christmas in Trafalgar Square

Christmas tree lighting ceremony

Each year since 1947, a Christmas tree has been given to the people of London from the people of Norway in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II. For many Londoners the Christmas tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square signal the countdown to Christmas.

In 2008 the Christmas tree lighting ceremony was on Thursday 4 December, with the Mayor of London, the Lord Mayor of Westminster and the Mayor of Oslo taking part, and carol-singing led by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Book now to see the Christmas lights and Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square.

The Oxford Street Christmas lights

The Xmas lights in LondonEach Christmas the street is decorated with festive lights. In mid-to-late November a celebrity turns on the lights and they remain on until 6 January (Twelfth Night).

The use of Christmas lights began in 1959, five years after its neighbour Regent Street had begun the tradition. In 1967, as the recession hit London, the lights were stopped and only returned in 1978 when Oxford Street organised a laser display.[4]
